Dehydration is a condition in which the body's water and electrolytes are depleted. Electrolytes are substances that contain free ions that the body uses in vital cellular activity. If not treated properly, this condition can lead to serious illnesses and even death.

Insufficient water intake, when combined with extremely hot weather, can result in severe dehydration or heatstroke (severe form of heat illness). In the first three hours, plain water is the best option. Sports drinks and other electrolyte-containing beverages are recommended by health professionals. These products may replenish lost nutrients more quickly than regular water.

Here are some additional remedies that can be used to prevent dehydration:


  •  Limit or avoid the consumption of dehydrating beverages such as coffee, tea, and soda. Caffeine-containing beverages may increase the risk of dehydration.

  • if Caffeine-containing beverages are consumed it is recommended that  more water than the average daily total. Drinking more water can compensate for the dehydration caused by these drinks.

  • Consume plenty of fruits and vegetables. These foods are high in water content and may help to increase the water content of the body.

  • Thirst is not a reliable indicator of dehydration. Individuals may require water long before they experience thirst.


Many cases of dehydration can be avoided by staying cool and avoiding hot environments. It is a preventable condition that, if left untreated, can lead to death. Dehydration should be avoided at all costs, especially during sports activities and in extremely hot weather. In most cases, home treatment is all that is required to treat mild dehydration. However, severe exhaustion and dehydration may necessitate immediate medical attention. Understanding the causes, symptoms, and potential treatments for dehydration may help many people become more aware of their water intake and improve their health.
